HCA Healthcare RN Career Pathways: Heather Stafford

♪ [music] ♪ I knew when I was in elementary school
that I wanted to be a nurse. I’ve always been the peacemaker throughout
life, and that’s just something that I wanted to do in my professional
career as well. ♪ [music] ♪ I began as a nurse technician. I was floated to the emergency department
during a clinical, and that’s where I fell in love with the ER. It’s very busy all the time. A lot of patients coming in for a variety
of different issues, but you get to be that nurse that can
fix things for them and fix them fast. I transitioned over to the cardiac cath
lab and interventional radiology. I became a clinical coordinator in those
departments, and that kind of led me down my leadership journey. From that point, doors
started opening for me. HCA Healthcare has a great leadership
development institute, and I had a fantastic director at the time
that recommended me for that program. And that led me from a clinical
coordinator into the director role. It just opened up so many opportunities
for my career. ♪ [music] ♪ As a leader today, I try to reflect back
on my experiences as a bedside nurse, which is something that,
from time to time, I do miss, but I’m also still a nurse and I don’t
ever want to forget my roots, and where I came from. On a day-to-day, it’s not uncommon that if
I’m out rounding, I love being able to be a leader that can also step in and I can
give real time feedback to a nurse that might be struggling with
something or have questions. I’ve been so fortunate to have those types
of leaders support me and that’s something that I want to continue doing for those
folks that are coming up. Your career journey is not always a
straight path to success. Sometimes there’s some
bumps along the road. You can’t focus on the next job. You have to focus on doing an excellent
job right now and other things will come. Just think about what
am I doing right now? How can I make the best impact? ♪ [music] ♪ HCA Healthcare just
continues to raise the bar. I’ve been given the opportunity to be a
leader in a hospital that’s closer to my own person community and closer to my
children and their school, to be able to provide healthcare and
leadership in my community that I grew up in and integrate family into work life. As a leader, it’s important for people
that we work with everyday to see that you are human, that I am a mom, I do,
you know, have a life outside of work as well. So these events that we have,
whether it be a walk or some kind of clean up in a community, your family also gets
to see what you do everyday and the people that you work with when you are away from
them and at work. Working for HCA Healthcare professionally
has been the greatest opportunity, I feel like, that I’ve had. I’ve been supported throughout my growth,
the development. And if you have that voice and you speak
up, there’s people listening, that want to hear, that want to hear what
your goals are and what you want to do, how you want to succeed,
and they are there to help you. So, not only for my professional life,
but also my personal life as well, working for an organization that cares
like family and really strives to help you be successful, not only at work but also
at home, is just an amazing opportunity. ♪ [music] ♪
