as a member of the healthcare team you
serve an important role in providing quality care to patients and residents
your job is important to prevent infections and keep the environment safe
for the staff patients and visitors this video will educate you about high touch
surfaces and how to properly clean and disinfect these surfaces germs are
everywhere within the patient or resident room there are many high touch
surfaces these items are touched by the patient or resident and by the nursing
staff and others hundreds of times a day and are full of germs that can make our
patients and staff ill can you identify the high touch surfaces in this scene
the over bed table and buttons the call light the bed rail the bed rail buttons
the faucets the light switch the hand sanitizer
the door-handle these are all examples of high touched items cleaning and
disinfecting high touch services requires disinfectant chemicals at the
beginning of your shift you will fill a clean empty bucket with disinfecting
solution when you are ready to clean and disinfect immerse the cleaning cloth
into the solution then wring out the cloth leaving it very moist but not
dripping in most cases cleaning and disinfecting occur in one easy step
however it visibly dirty with blood or bodily fluids for example then the area
must be cleaned before the disinfectant is allowed to work cleaning and
disinfecting requires more than a surface wipe with a disinfectant
cleaning cloth germs stick to the surface of the items and live in the
debris left on the item soil and debris must be removed first which requires
rubbing the surface to loosen and remove the debris rub the surfaces by applying
moderate pressure pressure and friction will remove all debris and soil continue
to apply pressure and rub three to four strokes over each surface area before
moving to the next surface area work your cleaning cloth inside around in
between all services such as cords bed rails and control buttons handles and
levers this is the cleaning step of the process disinfection is the process of
killing the germs that are on the object the surface needs to remain wet for a
period that meets manufacturer recommendations based on the type of
disinfectant solution used at your facility allowing the item to air dry
provides enough time for the disinfectant to kill the remaining germs
do not remove the disinfectant with a dry cloth allow the disinfectant to air
dry focus your cleaning on the high touch surfaces cleaning and disinfecting

fluorescent agent we will demonstrate the cleaning and disinfecting of these
surfaces with several wipes use disinfectant solution on a cleaning
cloth the cloth should be very moist but not dripping we will wipe the surface
with a disinfecting cloth with one wipe notice how there is still glowing agent
on the surfaces the glowing agent represents germs therefore one wipe of
the disinfectant cloth will often result in germs left on the surface use
pressure and friction to wipe surfaces and remove all debris notice how it
takes several swipes of the disinfectant cloth to remove the fluorescent agent
this is the same action required to remove the debris and disinfect the
germs cleaning and disinfecting the over bed table requires detailed cleaning
disinfecting in multiple areas when cleaning and disinfecting pay special
attention to the areas on items that might hide and protect germs this
includes the buttons or controls on the over bed table use the cleaning cloth
wipe surfaces multiple times by applying moderate pressure work the cleaning
cloth inside around and between all surfaces remember it takes several wipes
of the disinfecting cloth to remove the germs

patient resident or the staff high touch areas need special attention and require
detailed cleaning look closely for blood or bodily fluids or any other debris
when doing your cleaning and disinfecting remove the debris by
rubbing the surface aggressively first then rewrite the area again with the
disinfecting solution germs live in our environment and travel
from place to place by hand contact as an Environmental Services employee you
are a very important part in the reduction of germs in your healthcare
setting
