2010 Success Story – Lori Yates | Anytime Fitness

[TYPING] LORI YATES: Went to
the doctor today. I’m morbidly obese. Happy 45th birthday. I look at my lab results. Diagnosis of diabetes
is confirmed. LESLIE BECKER: That
puts her at risk into the future of all kinds
of serious complications which comes with diabetes. It’s vascular disease,
heart attack, strokes, kidney failure, blindness,
skin ulcerations, amputations. LORI YATES: Doctor’s
office called. I am not returning the call. I will not have the
diagnosis of diabetes. I receive a letter in the mail. The doctor says I
have to come in. I have diabetes, and
I need to be treated. NARRATOR: Two weeks
after her 45th birthday, depressed and
desperate, Lori Yates began changing her life
at Anytime Fitness. ALEX SEAL: She was
very depressed, and she wanted to feel
good about herself again. She wanted to lose weight. So I told her, well,
I can help you. NARRATOR: Exercising at
300 pounds was not easy. LORI YATES: I have had my
second workout with my trainer, and have done four
days at the gym. My body hurts. However, I don’t think
it hurts nearly as much as my bruised ego. I tried to get off the
ground, and reality hit. I can’t get off the floor. Tears rolled down my face,
but I’m not quitting. NARRATOR: Because Lori’s weight
limited what she could do, trainer Alex Seal
modified her routines. LORI YATES: I lost
one pound a day. I weigh 279 pounds. Yay. Alex kicked my butt
in training today. I worked thrusters,
kettlebell swings with the 25-pound weight,
biceps, triceps, push-ups. I crawled out of the gym. NARRATOR: After losing more than
40 pounds in just four months, Lori got some incredible
news from her doctor. LESLIE BECKER: Her
A1C, which initially was 8.5, it wasn’t even above
6.5, in the diabetic range. It was 5.9. And so I did tell her that
she cured her diabetes. NARRATOR: But that was
just the beginning. Check out Lori now. ALEX SEAL: Nice and controlled. Use your legs. Good job, Lori. NARRATOR: Keep in mind,
this is not just for show. ALEX SEAL: And go. 20 seconds. NARRATOR: It’s merely one
of Lori’s typical sessions with Alex. LORI YATES: What I told
her was, you dish it out, and I’ll do it. NARRATOR: In just 14 months,
Lori lost 120 pounds, and completely
transformed herself. LORI YATES: Oh my
god, it’s awesome. It is the most
incredible feeling, except when you’re gonna
throw up and pass out, but even that’s fun. And that’s gonna be it. NARRATOR: To witness
Lori’s dedication– LORI YATES: Got it. NARRATOR: –is to be inspired. LORI YATES: Yeah. SPEAKER: How much? LORI YATES: Uh,
what was that, 630? Yeah. That’s the most I’ve ever done. OK. So exercise is medicine. There’s no need for Prozac here. MINDY LEWIS: I’ve met a
lot of people in my life, and I’ve honestly never
met somebody as focused and dedicated as Lori is. COREY LEWIS: She’s usually in
here three to four times a day. MARSHA KUHNEL: She’s beautiful,
like, from inside out. Beauty isn’t always
about looks, it’s about the type of person and
kind of heart that they have, and Lori has a very big heart. NANCY YATES: She
talks constantly about Anytime Fitness. She loves it. She loves the people here. NARRATOR: Her parents
believe that Anytime Fitness may have saved Lori’s life. NANCY YATES: I’m
so proud of you. NARRATOR: In
addition to exercise, Lori says, tracking
the foods she eats has been key to her success. LORI YATES: It keeps
me honest, and that’s the most important part of this. NARRATOR: Lori also says
that Anytime Fitness has given her something she
lacked for many years– hope. LORI YATES: Anytime Fitness
is all about a second chance in life, and I love it. [MUSIC PLAYING] NARRATOR: Reflecting on how far
she’s come is mind-boggling. LORI YATES: I
never thought there would be a day that I would
truly, truly love myself, love my body, love where
I’m at in my life. NARRATOR: Perhaps most
rewarding of all for Lori is a letter she received
from her doctor. LESLIE BECKER: So
this is a letter that I’d written to
Lori dated June 15th– LORI YATES: I picked up
the letter from Dr. Becker yesterday, and
read it and cried. LESLIE BECKER: I often
use you as an example in trying to encourage my
other patients to achieve their own success in
lifestyle changes. Thank you for providing
inspiration and motivation to my other patients. Keep up the great work. NARRATOR: The final
entry in Lori’s journal about becoming an Anytime
Fitness success story was written two days later. LORI YATES: National winner? Well, you’re looking at her. MAN: Anytime Fitness
member Lori Yates was diagnosed with
diabetes in 2009. She shortly joined
Anytime Fitness, and now there’s no turning back. [RAPPING] She works hard,
sweats and perspires. Eyes on the prize with
the eye of the tiger. She won’t back
down, and that’s why she’s a fighter, when
it’s not an easy road, but the Lord’s
there to guide her. Not long ago, she
felt worthless, but dug deep inside herself
and found the courage to make change. And through all
the aches and pain, she finally put a stop
to her weight gain. And we salute you.
